Herb of Immortality (Jiaogulan)
(Gynostemma pentaphyllum)
- Description : Very surprising perennial cucurbit with insignificant fruits but edible foliage and renowned for its virtues and its use in Chinese medicine as well as for its sweetening (sweetening) side. Some Chinese populations whose life expectancy is incredibly high, say that it is this plant which gives them this "immortal" life hence its name. This excellent "health" plant is mainly used in infusion or even to "sweeten" coffee or any other drink (although the plant is not caloric or sweet). Its leaves can also be mixed in salads. Growing well, it can be left as ground cover or ideally to climb on a support (wire mesh, shrub etc.). Cut back and mulch before winter to start again well in spring.
- Stimulates natural defenses, lowers blood pressure, regulates cholesterol levels, prevents cardiovascular accidents (caution, cannot be used as a medicine).
- Exposure : Sun to partial shade
- Floor : Ordinary floor
- Harvest period : All season long as there is foliage.
- Hardiness : Frost-sensitive plant, to be cut back and mulched during the winter.
