"Grenadine" apple tree
(Malus domestica)
- Synonyms :
- Origin : California
- History : Variety rescued by Ram Fishman in the 1970s from the remains of Albert Etter's experimental orchard in Ettersberg, California. Its name comes from its resemblance to the pomegranate (photo 3).
- Fruit description : A good-sized eating apple, red when ripe, dotted with yellow lenticels (remarkable appearance). Dark red/pink flesh. Acidic when picked, it softens during storage while taking on a wine-red color and becomes an excellent eating apple. Pink flowers.
- Use : Very good eating apple, ideal for amateurs.
- Harvest : From mid-October.
- Conservation :
- Pollination : Cross-pollination.
- Disease resistance : Good general resistance.
- Available rootstocks :
- M106 : For outdoor apple trees. Adapts to almost all soils and is particularly well-suited to Brittany. Resists root asphyxiation very well and attracts very little woolly aphids. Good rooting, which gives it good resistance to vole attacks.
Fruiting fairly quickly in 3-4 years.
Lifespan: 60 years and over.
- M26 : For trained or low-stem apple trees, ideal for small city gardens. Small apple tree (3m) with very rapid fruiting (2-3 years). Not suitable as a tree for outdoor use due to its weak root system (but much better than M9) unless it is well supported for life.
Lifespan 40 years and more.
