"Clinton" Vine
(Vitis labrusca x riparia)
Clinton is an American variety that is very resistant to diseases (mildew, powdery mildew, phylloxera, etc.), close in taste to Isabelle but not very different...
A prohibition vine, the Clinton grape variety was classified as a "forbidden" vine following the 1934 law (supposedly because its wine drives people crazy...). Today (and since 2003) Clinton is still only authorized for private use and remains prohibited to winegrowers.
It offers rather airy clusters of small, round berries, very black when ripe. Its thick skin stands out well from the flesh with a foxy taste and a pronounced aroma of wild berries and raspberry!
Delicious raw, it is also very interesting in fruit salads, sorbet or even in savory dishes.
Very easy to grow, vigorous and very resistant to disease, Clinton is a rather early vine which will perform very well outdoors in Brittany.
Grow it in a greenhouse for an even earlier harvest!
